Lab Packing Project

Customer Industry: Education

The Problem:

Customer needed compliant transport and disposal of hazardous waste as well as advice on selecting chemicals for classroom experiments that wouldn’t result in overly expensive disposal costs.

A local school district needed to safely dispose of their hazardous waste generated from a variety of departments at their schools. Additionally, the science teachers needed help determining which classroom experiments should be selected based on the chemical involved. Thoughtful selection can reduce the amount of hazardous waste generated and avoid any high cost disposal items. With complex EPA guidelines, the school district wanted to be sure they were handling their hazardous waste compliantly and in the safest manner possible.

Our Solution: Provide a plan to safely and compliantly manage their lab packing needs

We job walked all the schools that had any hazardous waste and the district maintenance base. After our multi-site survey it was decided that the best course of action would be to remove and stop the use of certain chemicals, such as reactive and highly toxic chemicals that are difficult and/or costly to dispose of. Once this was done, we could clean out their waste storage areas of any lab or maintenance wastes on a routine basis after each term. We suggested coming in on a teacher workday to package their flammable, toxic, corrosive, oxidizer and non-regulated chemicals from their science and art departments.

During each visit we also planned to take paint waste, drums of oil, old gasoline, aerosols, herbicides, batteries and light tubes from their maintenance and auto shop areas. We serve as a one-stop shop for all their schools’ lab packing and hazardous waste disposal needs.

To remove the waste safely and compliantly from the schools, our team travels to each location with carts which allow us to safely move the chemicals to an area where we can identify, segregate and package it all for proper transport. This packaging process, is called “lab packing” and it is done based on DOT regulations for the proper and safe transport of hazardous wastes and materials. Its main function is to prevent and communicate all hazards associated to the waste being shipped, such as:

  • Labeling the drums and placarding the vehicles
  • Preparing shipping documents and manifests with DOT shipping names
  • Careful packaging to prevent spills through breakage of inner containers
  • Packaging incompatible chemicals and different hazard classes separately

The Results:

School districts continually compliment us and our services for our honesty, effective communication and cost saving efforts.

Mitigate risks and hazards by using, and having, access to the expert knowledge on chemical management from the team at WasteXpress. Science teachers in particular, benefit from our lab packing consultations and services. We work with science teachers to:

  • identify what lab chemicals they want to have disposed of
  • which toxic wastes might impact their waste generator status
  • which toxic wastes, if generated, could affect their budget
  • informed selections for experiments that don’t involve expensive waste disposal of certain chemicals

After an initial consultation and process development we can schedule routine maintenance, pickups and transportation according to your needs. As always, our turnkey services include all required shipping documents, placards and labels for transport.
